This used snowmobile trailer is a 2022 7×19 aluminum enclosed trailer on tandem axles, with a rear ramp, a black and charcoal finish and a 7,000 lb GVWR. It’s a lighter, cheaper way into an enclosed sled trailer, and it’s for sale now.

What you get with this used snowmobile trailer

The box is about 7 by 19 ft, roughly 2.1 x 5.8 m. That’s usually enough for two sleds plus gear, sometimes three smaller ones depending on length. The aluminum body is lighter than steel and doesn’t rust the same way when it’s coated in road salt for months.

Being a 2022 unit, it’s had a few winters but it’s far from old. Ask us for photos of the floor, ramp and running gear.

Why aluminum is worth it for sleds

Salt and slush eat steel. Aluminium resists corrosion far better, and the lighter weight leaves more of the 7,000 lb (3,175 kg) rating for your machines. Axles, hubs and springs are still steel, so they need a rinse after salty trips.

Towing a used snowmobile trailer

A half-ton pickup or a large SUV rated for the loaded weight usually manages it. The gross vehicle weight rating includes the trailer. On icy roads leave extra room to stop and keep speed down.

Loading sleds

Drive the heavier sled in first and keep it centred. Strap front and rear to separate anchors. Fuel cans upright and strapped.

Mistakes to avoid

Not checking the ramp hinges and seals on a used trailer. Look at them before your first trip, and grease the bearings.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed and hooked
Breakaway cable clipped to the vehicle, not to the chains
Trailer brakes tested at walking speed
All lights and indicators working
Tire pressures and wheel nuts checked
Load chained or strapped, weight just ahead of the axles
Jack raised and ramps or doors secured

Run through this every time you hook up your used snowmobile trailer. Then check the load again after the first few kilometres, because things settle.

Trailer terms explained

Words that come up when you shop for a used snowmobile trailer:

GVWR: the most the trailer and everything inside can weigh together.
Payload: the GVWR minus the empty weight of the trailer.
Interior height: the clear height inside, which decides whether you can stand up and what fits through the door.
Barn doors: two hinged rear doors that swing open.
Ramp door: a rear door that folds down to make a loading ramp.
E-track: slotted rails on the walls or floor for straps, shelves and hooks.

How owners use a used snowmobile trailer

Weekend riders head to the trails with two sleds and dry gear. In summer, the same box carries dirt bikes or a small UTV. A used snowmobile trailer works all year. The snowmobile page is a good read if you’re new to riding.

Storing it

Park on firm, level ground with the jack on a block. Aluminum does not rust, but the steel axles, hubs and springs still like to stay out of standing water. Move the trailer now and then so the tires do not flat-spot. Keep wet leaves and mulch off the deck. A coupler lock keeps your used snowmobile trailer where you left it.

Compare other snowmobile trailers

The aluminum snowmobile trailer is a newer 7×21. For bigger groups, the 7×25 snowmobile trailer carries more sleds. Want a general box? See the used cargo trailer.

Accessories worth adding

E-track rails on the walls are the most useful upgrade for any enclosed trailer. Straps, shelves, bike chocks and hooks clip on and move where you need them. Add a battery LED light for loading at night, a rubber floor mat so things do not slide, and a coupler lock plus a disc lock on the door latch. Some owners fit a roof vent, a spare wheel mount and a small fire extinguisher inside their used snowmobile trailer.

Before you buy

Write down the biggest things you plan to carry and measure them, including height. Check your vehicle tow rating and hitch, and make sure you have somewhere to park a tall trailer at home. If you will load bikes, mowers or carts, a ramp door helps. If you load from a dock or forklift, barn doors are easier. With those answers, it is simple to tell whether this used snowmobile trailer is right for you. If you are unsure, send us your list and we will help.

Driving with an enclosed trailer

A tall, flat-fronted trailer catches wind, so slow down on exposed roads and keep both hands on the wheel when trucks pass. Fuel use goes up compared with an open trailer, so plan stops on long trips. You cannot see through the box, which makes good towing mirrors essential. A cheap wireless rear camera makes reversing your used snowmobile trailer much less stressful. Watch overhead clearance at car parks, fuel stations and drive-throughs.

Common questions

How many sleds fit in this used snowmobile trailer?

Usually two. Send us the lengths and we’ll check for three.

What condition is it in?

Ask us for recent photos and notes.

Does it have a front ramp?

Ask us to confirm.

Can I convert it into a workshop or camper?

Plenty of people do, with insulation, shelving, lights and a vent. Check local rules if you plan to sleep in it.

How do I stop condensation inside?

Keep a vent open, avoid storing wet gear for long periods and air it out on dry days.

Do you offer delivery?

Ask us about delivery to your area when you order your used snowmobile trailer.

What to check when it arrives

Work the ramp, check seals, floor, lights, brakes, bearings and tire dates.

Tires and wheel bearings

Trailer tires age faster than they wear. A set can look fine on tread and still be cracked in the sidewalls after five or six years, especially if the trailer sits outside in the sun. Check the date code on the sidewall when you buy spares, and keep them at the pressure printed on the tire, not the one on your tow vehicle door.

Bearings want fresh grease about once a year or every 12,000 miles (20,000 km), whichever comes first. Feel the hubs with the back of your hand at a fuel stop. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch means stop and look before going further. A spare wheel that fits your used snowmobile trailer is cheap insurance, so carry one.

Parking and storing between jobs

Park on firm, level ground where you can. Chock a wheel on both sides if the ground slopes even slightly, and put a board under the jack foot on soft soil or hot asphalt so it doesn’t sink. A coupler lock costs little and stops the easiest kind of theft.

Lift the tongue a touch higher than the back so rain runs off instead of pooling. If your used snowmobile trailer will sit for months, take some weight off the tires with stands and cover the coupler so it doesn’t fill with grit.

Wiring and lights

Most electrical trouble on a trailer comes down to a bad ground. If a light flickers or the indicators blink at a strange speed, clean the ground point on the frame and the plug pins before buying new bulbs. A little dielectric grease on the plug keeps water out.

LED lights draw less power and last longer, but they still need a clean connection. Test everything on your used snowmobile trailer with a helper before each trip. It takes thirty seconds and saves a roadside stop.

Backing up without the stress

Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Move your hand left and the back of the trailer goes left. That one trick sorts out most of the confusion. Go slowly, make small corrections, and get out to look whenever you aren’t sure. Nobody minds waiting ten seconds; everybody minds a dented gate post.

Longer trailers are easier to reverse than short ones because they react more slowly, so don’t let the length of a used snowmobile trailer put you off. Half an hour in an empty car park with a couple of cones does more than any amount of reading.
