If you need to move tools, stock or furniture and keep it all dry and locked, this 2027 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer is a good place to start. It’s a white steel box on a single axle, with full barn doors at the back, 78 inches of interior height and a 2,990 lb GVWR.

Why people pick a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer

Six by twelve is one of the most common enclosed sizes, and there’s a reason. It’s big enough to work as a mobile workshop or carry the contents of a small flat, but still short enough to park in a normal driveway and tow behind a mid-size SUV or pickup.

Inside you get roughly 1.8 by 3.7 metres of floor. The 78-inch (about 2 m) ceiling means most adults can stand up straight, which matters more than you’d expect when you’re in and out of a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer ten times a day.

Barn doors or a ramp?

This one has barn doors, two hinged doors that swing open at the back. They work well with a loading dock or forklift, they don’t need space behind the trailer for a ramp to drop, and they seal tight. If you mostly roll things in, like a mower or motorbike, a ramp door is easier. We have both, so check the 6×10 aluminum cargo trailer with rear ramp if that suits you better.

What it’s used for

Tradespeople carrying tools, ladders and materials between jobs
Small business owners delivering stock or running market stalls
Families moving house without hiring a truck
Keeping motorcycles, ATVs or garden equipment out of the weather

White walls reflect sunlight, so the inside stays cooler in summer than a dark trailer would. That helps if you carry paint, electronics or anything else that doesn’t like heat.

A lot of owners fit shelves, hooks and E-track to the walls and end up with a workshop on wheels. Everything has a place, nothing rattles loose, and you can lock up at night instead of unloading tools into the house.

Weight and towing

On this 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer, the 2,990 lb GVWR (around 1,356 kg) is the total the trailer and cargo should weigh together. Read up on gross vehicle weight rating if you’re new to towing, and check your vehicle’s tow limit before loading. A steel 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer weighs more empty than an open one, so your real payload is the GVWR minus the trailer’s own weight.

Keep heavy items low and just ahead of the axle, and tie everything to the walls or floor. A closed box hides a shifting load until you open the doors, and by then the damage is done. Tall enclosed trailers also catch wind, so take it easy on open roads on gusty days and give yourself extra room to stop.

Keeping it in good shape

Check the roof seams and door seals on a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer once or twice a year. Water gets in through small gaps long before you notice a leak, and a soaked floor is the main thing that ages an enclosed trailer. Oil the barn door hinges and latches so they don’t seize, keep the wheel bearings greased and look over the tires before every long trip.

A coupler lock and a good padlock on the door handle are cheap and worth having. A locked trailer parked out of sight is a lot less tempting than one sitting by the road.

Need more room than a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer?

The 7×14 tandem axle cargo trailer with barn doors adds a second axle and a lot more space. For cars and big equipment, the 8.5×20 cargo trailer with rear ramp is the next step. If you don’t need a roof, compare our open utility trailers, or read choosing the right trailer for every hauling need first.

Setting up the inside

Plan the layout of your 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer before you start drilling. Heavy things like generators or toolboxes should sit low and toward the front, just ahead of the axle. Long items such as ladders and pipe can hang from the ceiling or ride on wall racks. Keep a walkway down the middle, so you are not climbing over gear to reach the back.

E-track rails on both walls are worth the small cost. You can clip straps, shelves and bike holders onto them and move things around as your needs change.

Accessories worth adding

A spare wheel, a jockey wheel for moving the trailer by hand, a coupler lock and a battery LED light for the inside cover most needs. If you load heavy items by hand, a small set of loading ramps or a dolly saves your back. Business owners often put their logo on the sides too, since a white box makes a big, clean sign that follows you to every job.

Hitching and towing an enclosed trailer

Hitching up works the same as with any trailer: coupler on the ball, latch closed, pin in, chains crossed, lights plugged in and tested. The difference with a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer is what happens on the road. The flat front and tall sides catch a lot of air, so fuel use goes up and crosswinds push harder. Keep your speed sensible and keep both hands on the wheel when trucks pass.

You also can’t see through it. Good towing mirrors make reversing and lane changes much easier, and a cheap wireless camera on the back of the trailer is one of the best small upgrades you can make.

Mistakes people make with cargo trailers

Overloading the back of a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer is the big one. It’s natural to fill from the doors forward, which ends up putting the last, often heavy, items behind the axle. That makes the trailer sway. Load heavy things first, at the front, and finish with lighter items near the doors.

Another is skipping the straps because everything is boxed in. A crate that slides into a wall at a roundabout can dent the skin from the inside, and loose tools damage everything around them.

A third is forgetting the height. You need to watch for low bridges, car park barriers and drive-through roofs. Stick a note with the overall height on your dash for the first few weeks.

Who a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer suits best

It’s a strong fit for electricians, plumbers, painters and other trades who carry lots of small tools and stock. It suits mobile businesses like caterers, DJs and market traders, who load late and leave gear locked inside overnight. Movers and families like it because a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer holds a surprising amount of furniture and boxes. Motorbike owners like having a dry, secure place for a bike on the way to a track day.

If you only haul garden waste, an open trailer is cheaper and easier. If you need to keep things dry, secure or out of sight, enclosed wins.

What to check when it arrives

When your 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer arrives, open both doors and make sure they close and latch smoothly. Look at the roof and corner seams, check the floor is dry and solid, test all the lights with your vehicle and confirm the tire pressures. Ask for the bearing service interval and keep the paperwork somewhere safe.

Common questions

Can an SUV tow a 6×12 enclosed cargo trailer?

Many mid-size and full-size SUVs can, once they have a hitch and a tow rating above the loaded weight. Check your vehicle’s manual, and remember the trailer’s empty weight is part of that total.

Can I turn it into a camper or workshop?

Plenty of people do. Insulation, a roof vent, some lighting and shelving go a long way. If you plan to sleep in it, check your local rules first, since some places treat converted trailers differently.

How do I keep my cargo secure?

Use a locking hitch pin or coupler lock, a strong padlock on the doors, and park with the doors facing a wall if you can.

Can I add vents, windows or extra lights later?

Usually, yes. A good trailer shop can fit roof vents, windows or more interior lighting. If you already know you want changes, mention it before you order and we can talk it through.
