This gravity tilt trailer is a single axle 6×12 tilt and load model, TL612-5K, with a 5,000 lb GVWR. No hydraulics, no pump, no battery: the deck simply tips when the weight passes the pivot. It’s about as simple and reliable as a trailer gets, and it is for sale now.

What you get with this gravity tilt trailer

The model code tells you the basics: a 6 by 12 ft deck, about 1.8 x 3.7 m, on a single axle, rated at 5,000 lb (2,268 kg). That’s the right size for ride-on mowers, small tractors, ATVs, golf carts and garden machinery. Because the deck tilts, there are no ramps to lift and store.

How gravity tilt works

You release the lock and walk or drive the load forward. The deck tips down at the back, the machine rolls on, and when its weight passes the pivot the deck tips level again. A damper usually slows it so it doesn’t slam. Nothing electrical, nothing to leak, nothing to charge.

Towing a gravity tilt trailer

A mid-size SUV or pickup rated for the loaded weight handles it easily. Read about gross vehicle weight rating if you’re new to it. For landscaping work, it’s a nimble size that fits tight driveways.

Loading

Unlock, drive on slowly, let the deck level, lock it and strap the machine at four corners.

Mistakes to avoid

Forgetting to lock the deck after loading. Also, don’t let kids play on it while unlocked; it moves easily.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed
Lights and indicators working
Tire pressures right, wheel nuts tight
Load strapped down and balanced, heavy items forward
Jack fully raised

It takes two minutes before each trip with your gravity tilt trailer, and it catches most problems while you are still in the driveway.

Trailer terms explained

Words you will see when you compare any gravity tilt trailer:

GVWR: the most the trailer and its load can weigh together.
Payload: the GVWR minus the empty weight of the trailer.
Gravity tilt: a deck that tips by itself once the load passes the balance point.
Power tilt: a deck raised and lowered by a hydraulic pump.
Pivot point: where the deck tilts, usually near the axles.
Deck lock: holds the deck level for travel. Always check it before driving.

How owners use a gravity tilt trailer

Homeowners move a mower to a second property. Landscapers carry a ride-on and tools. Golf clubs move carts. A gravity tilt trailer is quick to load and needs almost no care.

Storing it

Park on firm, level ground with the jack on a block so it does not sink. Touch up chips before winter so rust does not get started. If the trailer sits for weeks, move it now and then so the tires do not flat-spot, and check pressures before the next trip. A coupler lock or wheel clamp is cheap insurance when your gravity tilt trailer is parked where people can see it.

Compare other tilt trailers

The 7000 lb tilt trailer is the same size with a higher rating. The 6×14 tilt trailer adds two feet. Also see the 6×12 tilt trailer.

Accessories worth adding

Chains and binders or heavy ratchet straps suited to your machines are the basics. Wheel chocks, a spare tire and a coupler lock come next. Many owners add a front winch for machines and cars that do not run, a tongue box for straps and gloves, and LED lights on the deck for loading in the dark. These extras make a gravity tilt trailer quicker and safer to use.

Before you buy

Measure your machines, check their weights with attachments and compare them with the deck size and GVWR. Confirm your truck can tow the loaded trailer and that your hitch matches the coupler. Think about how often you load. Gravity tilts suit occasional use, while power tilts make sense for daily loading or low and heavy machines. If those answers point here, this gravity tilt trailer will suit you. If not, ask us and we will help you choose.

Driving with a tilt trailer

Always check that the deck is locked level before you drive. A loaded tilt deck with a tall machine raises the centre of gravity, so corner gently and brake early. Re-check chains after the first few kilometres. When you arrive, unload on level ground and keep everyone clear of the deck while it moves. Treat your gravity tilt trailer like any heavy trailer and it will give you years of easy loading.

Common questions

Can this gravity tilt trailer carry a compact tractor?

Smaller ones, yes. Check the tractor weight plus loader.

Does it have brakes?

Ask us to confirm.

Is it hard to tilt?

No. The load’s weight does the work.

Is a tilt deck safe for low cars?

Yes. The low loading angle is one of the main reasons car owners choose a tilt deck.

Can I load from the side?

With the deck level, pallets can often be loaded from the side with a forklift.

What to check when it arrives

Test the tilt and lock, check deck, lights and tyres.

Your first few tows

Take the empty trailer for a short drive on quiet roads before your first real job. Get used to how it follows, how much wider you need to take corners, and how the brakes feel. Then try a light load, and only after that a full one.

Set the brake controller so the trailer brakes slightly before the truck, without locking the wheels. Leave twice your normal following distance. After about 50 miles (80 km), stop and re-torque the wheel nuts on your gravity tilt trailer, since new wheels can settle.

Backing up without the stress

Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Move your hand left and the back of the trailer goes left. That one trick sorts out most of the confusion. Go slowly, make small corrections, and get out to look whenever you aren’t sure. Nobody minds waiting ten seconds; everybody minds a dented gate post.

Longer trailers are easier to reverse than short ones because they react more slowly, so don’t let the length of a gravity tilt trailer put you off. Half an hour in an empty car park with a couple of cones does more than any amount of reading.

Parking and storing between jobs

Park on firm, level ground where you can. Chock a wheel on both sides if the ground slopes even slightly, and put a board under the jack foot on soft soil or hot asphalt so it doesn’t sink. A coupler lock costs little and stops the easiest kind of theft.

Lift the tongue a touch higher than the back so rain runs off instead of pooling. If your gravity tilt trailer will sit for months, take some weight off the tires with stands and cover the coupler so it doesn’t fill with grit.

Tires and wheel bearings

Trailer tires age faster than they wear. A set can look fine on tread and still be cracked in the sidewalls after five or six years, especially if the trailer sits outside in the sun. Check the date code on the sidewall when you buy spares, and keep them at the pressure printed on the tire, not the one on your tow vehicle door.

Bearings want fresh grease about once a year or every 12,000 miles (20,000 km), whichever comes first. Feel the hubs with the back of your hand at a fuel stop. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch means stop and look before going further. A spare wheel that fits your gravity tilt trailer is cheap insurance, so carry one.

Wiring and lights

Most electrical trouble on a trailer comes down to a bad ground. If a light flickers or the indicators blink at a strange speed, clean the ground point on the frame and the plug pins before buying new bulbs. A little dielectric grease on the plug keeps water out.

LED lights draw less power and last longer, but they still need a clean connection. Test everything on your gravity tilt trailer with a helper before each trip. It takes thirty seconds and saves a roadside stop.
