This used cargo trailer is a 2023 8.5×16 enclosed trailer in charcoal, on tandem axles with a 2 5/16 in coupler. If you want a wide box without paying new-trailer money, this is a sensible place to start, and it’s for sale now.

What you get with this used cargo trailer

The box is 8.5 by 16 ft, about 2.6 x 4.9 m. The extra width over a 7 ft trailer makes a real difference: pallets sit side by side, and there’s room to walk past your load. Two axles keep it stable, and the 2 5/16 in coupler is the common size for heavier trailers, so it should match most pickup hitches.

It’s a 2023 model, so it’s still young. Ask us for photos of the floor, walls and tires if you want a closer look before buying.

Buying a used cargo trailer sensibly

Used trailers are good value because the box itself barely wears. What wears is the running gear: tires, bearings, brakes and lights. Those are cheap to check and cheap to fix. Look at the floor for soft spots, the roof seams for water stains, and the door hinges for play. Ask about the tires’ age, not just their tread. We’re happy to answer all of this before you commit.

Towing this used cargo trailer

Your tow vehicle needs a rating above the loaded weight. If you’re new to the term, read about gross vehicle weight rating. Match your ball to the 2 5/16 in coupler; a smaller ball is dangerous. A guide to the tow hitch is useful if you’re setting up a truck for the first time.

Loading

Heavy items over and slightly ahead of the axles, everything strapped. The width helps you balance side to side, so use it.

Mistakes to avoid

Skipping a bearing service on a used trailer is the classic one. Grease them before your first long trip. The other is assuming the old tires are fine because they look fine.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed and hooked
Breakaway cable clipped to the vehicle, not to the chains
Trailer brakes tested at walking speed
All lights and indicators working
Tire pressures and wheel nuts checked
Load chained or strapped, weight just ahead of the axles
Jack raised and ramps or doors secured

Run through this every time you hook up your used cargo trailer. Then check the load again after the first few kilometres, because things settle.

Trailer terms explained

Words that come up when you shop for a used cargo trailer:

GVWR: the most the trailer and everything inside can weigh together.
Payload: the GVWR minus the empty weight of the trailer.
Interior height: the clear height inside, which decides whether you can stand up and what fits through the door.
Barn doors: two hinged rear doors that swing open.
Ramp door: a rear door that folds down to make a loading ramp.
E-track: slotted rails on the walls or floor for straps, shelves and hooks.

How owners use a used cargo trailer

Start-ups use one as a mobile workshop. Families use it for storage during a renovation. Riders carry bikes and gear. A used cargo trailer gives you most of the use of a new one at a lower price.

Storing it

Park on level ground with the jack on a block and crack a vent so moisture does not build up inside. Check roof seams and door seals before winter, since water in the floor is what ages an enclosed trailer fastest. Move it now and then so the tires do not flat-spot, and use a coupler lock and a good door lock to keep your used cargo trailer secure.

Compare other cargo trailers

For a new box with a ramp, see the 20 ft enclosed trailer. The 7×14 cargo trailer is a new, heavy-rated option. The used snowmobile trailer is another pre-owned buy.

Accessories worth adding

E-track rails on the walls are the most useful upgrade for any enclosed trailer. Straps, shelves, bike chocks and hooks clip on and move where you need them. Add a battery LED light for loading at night, a rubber floor mat so things do not slide, and a coupler lock plus a disc lock on the door latch. Some owners fit a roof vent, a spare wheel mount and a small fire extinguisher inside their used cargo trailer.

Before you buy

Write down the biggest things you plan to carry and measure them, including height. Check your vehicle tow rating and hitch, and make sure you have somewhere to park a tall trailer at home. If you will load bikes, mowers or carts, a ramp door helps. If you load from a dock or forklift, barn doors are easier. With those answers, it is simple to tell whether this used cargo trailer is right for you. If you are unsure, send us your list and we will help.

Driving with an enclosed trailer

A tall, flat-fronted trailer catches wind, so slow down on exposed roads and keep both hands on the wheel when trucks pass. Fuel use goes up compared with an open trailer, so plan stops on long trips. You cannot see through the box, which makes good towing mirrors essential. A cheap wireless rear camera makes reversing your used cargo trailer much less stressful. Watch overhead clearance at car parks, fuel stations and drive-throughs.

What to check when it arrives

Check doors, seals, floor, lights, brakes, bearings and tire date codes.

Tires and wheel bearings

Trailer tires age faster than they wear. A set can look fine on tread and still be cracked in the sidewalls after five or six years, especially if the trailer sits outside in the sun. Check the date code on the sidewall when you buy spares, and keep them at the pressure printed on the tire, not the one on your tow vehicle door.

Bearings want fresh grease about once a year or every 12,000 miles (20,000 km), whichever comes first. Feel the hubs with the back of your hand at a fuel stop. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch means stop and look before going further. A spare wheel that fits your used cargo trailer is cheap insurance, so carry one.

Wiring and lights

Most electrical trouble on a trailer comes down to a bad ground. If a light flickers or the indicators blink at a strange speed, clean the ground point on the frame and the plug pins before buying new bulbs. A little dielectric grease on the plug keeps water out.

LED lights draw less power and last longer, but they still need a clean connection. Test everything on your used cargo trailer with a helper before each trip. It takes thirty seconds and saves a roadside stop.

Registration and paperwork

Rules vary by country and region. Most places want trailers registered and plated, and many ask for brakes once the loaded weight passes a set limit. Some also need a separate safety inspection. Check what applies where you live before delivery so the paperwork is ready and you can use your used cargo trailer straight away. We supply the documents you need from our side, including the VIN and build details, and we can answer questions about weights and ratings.
