This 2026 6 horse trailer is a white aluminum slant load gooseneck with 16 ft of living quarters, a 9 ft slide-out and a 24,000 lb GVWR. It carries six horses and gives you a proper apartment up front, and it is for sale now.

What you get with this 6 horse trailer

Six horses travel in slant stalls behind a 16 ft (4.9 m) living area. The 9 ft (2.7 m) slide-out pushes the wall out when parked, which makes the living space feel much bigger. Aluminum construction keeps weight in check, and the 24,000 lb (10,886 kg) GVWR gives room for six horses, tack, water and supplies.

What a slide-out gives you

On the road the trailer stays within normal width. Parked, the slide-out adds floor space for a sofa, dining area or wider walkway. Keep the slide seals clean and lubricated, and always retract it fully before moving.

Towing a 6 horse trailer

At 24,000 lb this is serious towing. You’ll need a heavy-duty truck rated above the loaded weight and, in many regions, a suitable licence. The gross vehicle weight rating covers trailer, horses, water and gear. The horse trailer article is a useful primer.

Loading six horses

Load the heaviest horses first at the front. Close each divider as you go. Unload from the back.

Mistakes to avoid

Driving off with the slide-out not fully locked in. Make it part of your pre-trip check.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed and hooked
Breakaway cable clipped to the vehicle, not to the chains
Trailer brakes tested at walking speed
All lights and indicators working
Tire pressures and wheel nuts checked
Load chained or strapped, weight just ahead of the axles
Jack raised and ramps or doors secured

Run through this every time you hook up your 6 horse trailer. Then check the load again after the first few kilometres, because things settle.

Trailer terms explained

Terms worth knowing when you shop for a 6 horse trailer:

GVWR: the most the trailer, horses, tack, water and hay can weigh together.
Slant load: horses stand at an angle across the trailer, which keeps it shorter.
Straight load: horses stand facing forward, side by side.
Bumper pull: hitches to a ball at the back of your vehicle.
Gooseneck: hitches in the truck bed over the rear axle, which steadies heavy trailers.
LQ: living quarters, the camper-style space at the front of some trailers.

How owners use a 6 horse trailer

Trainers take a string of horses to shows. Ranches move horses for the season. A 6 horse trailer with living quarters becomes a mobile base.

Storing it

Clean out manure and bedding, lift the mats and let the floor dry fully before you park it. Leave a vent open, close the doors to keep animals and birds out, and park on level ground. Move the trailer every few weeks so the tires do not flat-spot, and check brakes and lights before the next season. A clean, dry 6 horse trailer lasts far longer.

Compare other horse trailers

The 4 horse living quarters trailer is smaller. For a premium build, see the aluminum living quarters trailer. For a budget four-horse, look at the used 4 horse trailer.

Accessories worth adding

Trailer ties with quick-release snaps, hay nets, a horse first aid kit and a water container are the basics. A spare tire with a ramp or block for changing it saves a lot of trouble. A camera system lets you watch the horses from the cab. Shipping boots or wraps protect legs, and a coupler lock keeps your 6 horse trailer safe when parked at shows or at home.

Before you buy

Measure your horses, height at the withers and length, and ask us for the stall sizes and interior height. Check your truck can tow the loaded weight, including horses, tack, water and hay, and that you have a brake controller. Think about where you will park the trailer and how you will load at home. If everything lines up, this 6 horse trailer will suit you. If you are unsure, send us your details and we will give you a straight answer.

Driving with horses

Drive as if you have a glass of water on the dashboard. Smooth starts, slow corners and gentle braking let your horses keep their balance. Stop every few hours on long trips to offer water and check on them. Keep vents open for air without strong drafts on their faces. A calm drive means your horses arrive fresh, which matters on show days and long trips in your 6 horse trailer.

Common questions

What truck do I need for this 6 horse trailer?

A heavy-duty truck rated above the loaded weight. Ask us for advice.

What’s in the living quarters?

Ask us for the fit-out list and photos.

Is delivery available?

Ask us about delivery to your area.

How often should I service it?

Check bearings, brakes and tires at least once a year, and the floor under the mats more often.

Can I leave hay in the trailer?

Short term yes, but do not store damp hay inside for long, since it holds moisture against the floor.

Do you offer delivery?

Ask us about delivery to your area when you order your 6 horse trailer.

What to check when it arrives

Check the slide-out, stalls, living systems, lights, brakes and tyres.

Living quarters upkeep

The living area works much like a small recreational vehicle, so it needs the same kind of care. Drain the water system before frost, check propane lines and appliances once a season, and keep the batteries charged when the trailer is stored.

Reseal roof seams and windows when the sealant starts to crack, because water damage is the most expensive repair on any living quarters. Run the generator or shore power once a month to keep everything working. Done regularly, a 6 horse trailer stays comfortable for many years.

Gooseneck towing basics

A gooseneck hitch sits in the truck bed, right over the rear axle. That spreads the weight better than a bumper hitch, cuts down on sway and lets you turn tighter. You need a pickup with a gooseneck ball fitted and enough bed length to clear the trailer nose on sharp turns.

Always check the safety chains and the coupler latch, and look over the ball for wear. The truck’s payload rating matters too, because a big share of the weight of a 6 horse trailer rests on the bed.

Planning a long trip

On long journeys, stop every three to four hours to check the horses, offer water and let them rest their legs. Some owners unload on very long trips; others keep them on board and simply open up for air. Carry more water than you think you’ll need, plus hay nets, a first-aid kit and the vet’s number.

Drive smoothly. Brake early, accelerate gently and take roundabouts slowly; horses have to balance the whole way. Plan fuel stops where a 6 horse trailer can pull in and out without tight turns.

Floors and mats

The floor carries all the weight of your horses, so it’s worth a proper look a few times a year. Lift the rubber mats, wash underneath and let everything dry before you lay them back. Urine and wet bedding trapped under mats are what damage floors, aluminum included.

Check for soft spots, cracks or corrosion around the edges and fixings. Good mats also cut down on noise and vibration, which helps nervous travellers settle. If the mats in your 6 horse trailer are worn thin or curling, replace them before the next season.

Ventilation and temperature

Horses produce a lot of heat and moisture, and a closed trailer warms up fast. Open the roof vents and drop-down windows on warm days, and keep air moving even in winter so ammonia and dust don’t build up. Fly screens help in summer.

Never leave horses standing in a parked trailer in the sun. If you’re stuck in traffic on a hot day, open everything you safely can. Light-colored roofs, like the one on this 6 horse trailer, stay noticeably cooler than dark ones.
