This 2027 5×8 aluminum trailer is the smallest open trailer in our range: a silver, single axle model with a 2,996 lb GVWR. It’s built for people who need a trailer now and then, want it to take up as little space as possible, and don’t want to deal with rust or paint.

What you get with this 5×8 aluminum trailer

The deck is 5 ft wide and 8 ft long, about 1.5 x 2.4 m. That’s enough for a ride-on mower, a full garden waste run, a washing machine and a few boxes, or a single motorbike. It’s compact enough to fit beside a car in a garage or tucked down the side of a house.

Aluminum makes it light. One person can roll it around by hand, lift the tongue onto the ball and park it without help. The silver metal needs no paint, and scratches won’t turn into rust.

Small trailer, fewer headaches

Big trailers are great until you have to store them. A 5×8 aluminum trailer is the opposite: small enough to live in a garage or narrow side yard, and light enough that hooking up is a two-minute job rather than a chore. Because aluminium doesn’t rust the way steel does, you can leave it outside without it slowly falling apart.

That ease is what makes people actually use it. Instead of borrowing a ute or paying for delivery, you just hook up and go.

Towing a 5×8 aluminum trailer

The 2,996 lb GVWR is the total for trailer and load. Check your vehicle’s towing limit, which may be lower, and read up on gross vehicle weight rating if needed. Keep about 60 percent of the load ahead of the axle.

Short trailers turn quickly when reversing, so small steering inputs go a long way. Practise in an empty car park the first time.

What fits

Most ride-on mowers, one motorbike, a quad, garden waste, white goods, a couple of bags of cement and bricks, or flat-pack furniture. Long timber over about 2.4 m will overhang, so strap it well and flag it if your local rules require it.

Looking after it

Rinse off mud and salt, grease the wheel bearings once a year and check tire pressure before trips. Test the lights every time you hook up your 5×8 aluminum trailer. That’s about all it needs.

Mistakes to avoid

Overloading with dense materials is the main one. A small deck full of soil or pavers can weigh far more than you’d guess. Tail-heavy loading is the second. The third is loose straps, and the fourth is forgetting about soft tires after the trailer has been parked.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed
Lights and indicators working
Tire pressures right, wheel nuts tight
Load strapped down and balanced, heavy items forward
Jack fully raised

It takes two minutes before each trip with your 5×8 aluminum trailer, and it catches most problems while you are still in the driveway.

Trailer terms explained

A few words you will see when you compare any 5×8 aluminum trailer with other models:

GVWR: the most the trailer and its load can weigh together.
Payload: the GVWR minus the empty weight of the trailer. This is what you can actually carry.
Tongue weight: the downward weight on your hitch, usually about 10 to 15 percent of the loaded weight.
Coupler: the part on the front of the trailer that locks onto your hitch ball.
Ramp gate: the rear gate that folds down so you can drive machines on.
Tandem axle: two axles that share the load and make the trailer more stable.

How owners use a 5×8 aluminum trailer

Gardeners use it for green waste and mulch. Renters and first home buyers use it to move. Riders take a bike to the track. Plenty of people buy a 5×8 aluminum trailer just to stop borrowing one from a neighbour.

Storing it

Park on firm, level ground with the jack on a block. Aluminum does not rust, but the steel axles, hubs and springs still like to stay out of standing water. Move the trailer now and then so the tires do not flat-spot. Keep wet leaves and mulch off the deck. A coupler lock keeps your 5×8 aluminum trailer where you left it.

Compare other small trailers

The 5×8 utility trailer is the steel version and costs less. The 5×10 aluminum trailer gives you two more feet, and the 6×12 aluminum trailer is a bigger step up.

Our guide to choosing the right trailer can help you compare.

Is a 5×8 too small?

For a lot of people, no. If your jobs are garden waste, a mower, a few boxes or a single motorbike, a 5×8 does it all, and it is far easier to store than anything bigger. Where it falls short is long loads and two machines. If you regularly carry timber longer than about 2.4 m, or two quads, step up to a 5×10 or 6×12. If you mainly want something small that you will actually use, a 5×8 aluminum trailer is hard to beat, and the aluminum means it will not rust away in the corner of the yard.

Accessories worth adding

A few cheap extras make an open trailer much more useful. Ratchet straps and wheel chocks keep machines and loads in place. A cargo net or tarp stops garden waste and light items blowing out. A spare wheel and a jack that fits the trailer can save a ruined day. A coupler lock stops anyone hitching up and driving off with your 5×8 aluminum trailer. Lawn crews often add a trimmer rack or a lockable tongue box for fuel and hand tools.

Before you buy

Check your vehicle tow rating and hitch ball size first. Then think about the heaviest load you carry most weeks, not the biggest job you do once a year, and measure the widest machine you plan to put on the deck. Finally, measure where you will park the trailer at home, including the tongue. If all of that lines up, this 5×8 aluminum trailer will fit the way you work. If you are not sure, send us your vehicle and what you plan to carry and we will give you a straight answer.

Driving with a trailer

Give yourself more room to stop, because a loaded trailer adds a lot of weight behind you. Take corners a little wider so the trailer wheels do not clip the kerb. On the motorway, keep a steady speed and avoid sudden steering. If the trailer starts to sway, ease off the accelerator gently and keep the wheel straight rather than braking hard. When reversing, small movements of the wheel go a long way. Practise in an empty car park the first few times you tow your 5×8 aluminum trailer, and it soon feels normal.

Common questions

Can a small car tow this 5×8 aluminum trailer?

Often yes, as long as the car has a hitch and a tow rating that covers the trailer plus your load.

Can I store it in my garage?

At 5×8 it fits in many garages beside a car. Measure your space with the tongue included.

Steel or aluminum?

Steel costs less. Aluminum weighs less and won’t rust. If it lives outside, aluminum is worth it.

Does it need registration?

That depends on your country or region. Check locally.

Will a quad fit on a 5×8?

Most single quads fit. Check the width of your machine against the space between the fenders before you buy.

Can I leave it outside?

Yes. Keep it on firm ground, check the tires before use and lock the coupler if it is visible from the road.

How often should I grease the bearings?

Once a year for most owners, or sooner if the trailer has been in deep water or does a lot of distance.

Do you offer delivery?

Ask us about delivery to your area when you order your 5×8 aluminum trailer, and we will explain the options and timing.

What to check when it arrives

Check the lights, coupler fit, tire pressures and wheel nuts, and work the gate a few times.
