This 5×10 trailer is a straightforward open utility trailer with a 5 ft by 10 ft deck. It’s the kind of trailer that earns its keep around the house and garden: big enough for a ride-on mower, a load of green waste or a room of furniture, and small enough to tow behind an everyday SUV and park beside the house.

What you get with this 5×10 trailer

The deck is about 1.5 x 3.0 m. That fits most ride-on mowers with tools behind, two dirt bikes, sheets of plywood laid flat, a fridge and a couch, or a full garden waste run. It’s a size a lot of people end up preferring because it does most jobs without feeling like you’re towing a truck.

Why a 5×10 trailer is such a handy size

A 5×8 is easy to store but runs out of length fast. A 6×12 or bigger carries more but takes more space and a stronger vehicle. A 5×10 trailer lands in the middle. Ten feet is enough for mower plus tools, standard timber lengths and most furniture, while five feet wide keeps it narrow enough for tight driveways and side gates.

Towing safely

Every trailer has a GVWR, the most it and its load can weigh together. Ask us for this trailer’s rating, then compare it with your vehicle’s towing limit. If you’re new to the idea, this explanation of gross vehicle weight rating is worth a read. Make sure your hitch ball matches the coupler. This overview of tow hitches covers the common types.

Keep about 60 percent of the weight ahead of the axle and strap everything down. Loose loads shift in the first few minutes, not out on the highway.

Loading tips

Load on level ground. Heavy items go in first, just ahead of the axle. Strap long items at two points. Cover garden waste and light loads so nothing blows out on the road. If you drive a mower up the gate, go slowly and straight in a low gear.

Looking after it

Wash off mud and salt, grease the bearings once a year, check tire pressures before long trips and test the lights every time you hook up your 5×10 trailer. Small regular checks keep a trailer going for years.

Mistakes to avoid

Overloading with dense materials is the most common one. Tail-heavy loading is next. The third is loose loads, and the fourth is forgetting tire pressure after the trailer has been parked for weeks.

Pre-trip checklist

Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed
Lights and indicators working
Tire pressures right, wheel nuts tight
Load strapped down and balanced, heavy items forward
Jack fully raised

It takes two minutes before each trip with your 5×10 trailer, and it catches most problems while you are still in the driveway.

Trailer terms explained

A few words you will see when you compare any 5×10 trailer with other models:

GVWR: the most the trailer and its load can weigh together.
Payload: the GVWR minus the empty weight of the trailer. This is what you can actually carry.
Tongue weight: the downward weight on your hitch, usually about 10 to 15 percent of the loaded weight.
Coupler: the part on the front of the trailer that locks onto your hitch ball.
Ramp gate: the rear gate that folds down so you can drive machines on.
Tandem axle: two axles that share the load and make the trailer more stable.

How owners use a 5×10 trailer

Gardeners use it for mulch and green waste. Renovators haul timber and rubbish. Families move furniture or take bikes on holiday. Small businesses use a 5×10 trailer for markets and deliveries.

Storing it

Park on firm, level ground with the jack on a block so it does not sink. Touch up chips before winter so rust does not get started. If the trailer sits for weeks, move it now and then so the tires do not flat-spot, and check pressures before the next trip. A coupler lock or wheel clamp is cheap insurance when your 5×10 trailer is parked where people can see it.

Compare other 5×10 models

The 5×10 utility trailer in steel has a 3,500 lb rating. The 5×10 aluminum trailer is lighter and rust-free. For a wider deck, look at the 77×12 utility trailer.

Accessories worth adding

A few cheap extras make an open trailer much more useful. Ratchet straps and wheel chocks keep machines and loads in place. A cargo net or tarp stops garden waste and light items blowing out. A spare wheel and a jack that fits the trailer can save a ruined day. A coupler lock stops anyone hitching up and driving off with your 5×10 trailer. Lawn crews often add a trimmer rack or a lockable tongue box for fuel and hand tools.

Before you buy

Check your vehicle tow rating and hitch ball size first. Then think about the heaviest load you carry most weeks, not the biggest job you do once a year, and measure the widest machine you plan to put on the deck. Finally, measure where you will park the trailer at home, including the tongue. If all of that lines up, this 5×10 trailer will fit the way you work. If you are not sure, send us your vehicle and what you plan to carry and we will give you a straight answer.

Driving with a trailer

Give yourself more room to stop, because a loaded trailer adds a lot of weight behind you. Take corners a little wider so the trailer wheels do not clip the kerb. On the motorway, keep a steady speed and avoid sudden steering. If the trailer starts to sway, ease off the accelerator gently and keep the wheel straight rather than braking hard. When reversing, small movements of the wheel go a long way. Practise in an empty car park the first few times you tow your 5×10 trailer, and it soon feels normal.

Common questions

Will a ride-on mower fit on this 5×10 trailer?

Most do. Measure the widest point of your mower and compare it with the space between the fenders.

What is the weight rating?

Ask us and we’ll confirm the GVWR and empty weight of this exact unit.

Does it need registration?

Rules vary by country and region. Check locally.

Can I leave it outside?

Yes. Keep it on firm ground, check the tires before use and lock the coupler if it is visible from the road.

How often should I grease the bearings?

Once a year for most owners, or sooner if the trailer has been in deep water or does a lot of distance.

Do you offer delivery?

Ask us about delivery to your area when you order your 5×10 trailer, and we will explain the options and timing.

What to check when it arrives

Check the lights, coupler fit, tire pressures and wheel nuts, and work the gate a few times.

Tires and wheel bearings

Trailer tires age faster than they wear. A set can look fine on tread and still be cracked in the sidewalls after five or six years, especially if the trailer sits outside in the sun. Check the date code on the sidewall when you buy spares, and keep them at the pressure printed on the tire, not the one on your tow vehicle door.

Bearings want fresh grease about once a year or every 12,000 miles (20,000 km), whichever comes first. Feel the hubs with the back of your hand at a fuel stop. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch means stop and look before going further. A spare wheel that fits your 5×10 trailer is cheap insurance, so carry one.
