The ETL718-10K is a hydraulic tilt trailer for anyone who’s done with ramps. Instead of dragging ramps out, setting them up and hoping they don’t slip, you press a button and the deck tilts down to the ground. This model has a 7 x 18 ft deck and a 10,000 lb GVWR.

How a hydraulic tilt trailer works

A hydraulic pump, usually run off an onboard battery, pushes a cylinder that raises the front of the deck and lowers the back to the ground. Drive or winch your machine on, then bring the deck back level. It’s the same principle as the hydraulic cylinder on an excavator, doing a simpler job.

With a gravity tilt, the deck tips once the load passes the balance point. A powered deck gives you control over the angle the whole time. That’s safer with low cars and with heavy machines you don’t want slamming down. If you’d rather keep it simple and spend less, our TL612-5K gravity tilt trailer is the manual option.

Specs that matter

The 7 x 18 ft deck works out to roughly 2.1 by 5.5 metres. That fits most compact equipment with room left for attachments. The 10,000 lb GVWR (about 4,536 kg) is the combined limit for trailer and load, so subtract the trailer’s empty weight to get your real payload. If GVWR is new to you, it’s worth reading up before you buy any hydraulic tilt trailer this size.

You’ll need a tow vehicle rated for the full weight, and a brake controller. A 3/4-ton pickup is the usual choice.

Check the coupler type and ball size against your truck before the trailer arrives, so it hooks straight up and you can start working the same day.

Loading tips

On a hydraulic tilt trailer, centre the machine side to side and set most of the weight just ahead of the axles before you lower the deck. Chain it down at four points, and chain buckets or attachments separately. Check the chains after the first few kilometres, since they often loosen as the load settles.

Load on level ground, and stay clear of the deck while it’s moving. Lower it slowly when a machine is on it, and keep hands and feet away from the pivot point.

Looking after the hydraulics

The battery is what drives the pump on a hydraulic tilt trailer, so keep it charged. A tender or a charge line from your tow vehicle helps if you don’t use the trailer every week. Check the fluid level a few times a year, look for weeping fittings or rubbed hoses, and grease the tilt pivot so it moves smoothly.

Like any trailer, it needs the usual checks too: bearings, tires, lights and brakes. A hydraulic tilt trailer that gets this kind of basic care will happily load and unload thousands of times.

Compare other hydraulic tilt trailer models

For heavier machines, the ETL718-14K power tilt has the same deck with a 14,000 lb rating, and the ETL722-14K stretches it to 22 feet. If you want a wider deck that sits above the wheels, look at the ETL822-14K deckover power tilt. Everything is in our tilt and load trailer collection, and flatbeds are under equipment trailers.

Who a power tilt deck suits

Power tilt trailers suit a few kinds of owners. Contractors and landscapers who move a skid steer or mini excavator every day like how fast loading becomes. Car owners like that a low car goes on without scraping. Rental businesses like that staff can load safely without heavy ramps. Farmers use them for compact tractors, mowers and pallets of feed or fencing.

If you only load a machine a few times a year, a gravity tilt or a trailer with ramps might do. If loading is part of your daily routine, a hydraulic tilt trailer pays for itself in time saved and fewer sore backs.

New to tilt decks? Take your time on the first few loads. Get a feel for how fast the deck moves and where the balance point sits with your machine on board. After a week it becomes second nature.

Accessories worth adding

A winch at the front of the deck helps with cars and machines that do not run. Wheel chocks and a good set of chains and binders keep equipment in place. A battery tender keeps the pump ready to go, and a spare tire is worth carrying on any trailer this heavy. Some owners also bolt a toolbox to the tongue for straps, gloves and a tire gauge.

Hitching up

A hydraulic tilt trailer at 10,000 lb GVWR needs a hitch setup rated for the full weight. Check that your ball or receiver is rated high enough, the coupler latch is closed and pinned, the safety chains are crossed and hooked, and the breakaway cable is attached to the truck itself. Plug in the lights, test them, and try the trailer brakes at walking speed before you drive off.

Make sure the deck is fully down and locked in the travel position before towing. Never drive with it partly tilted.

Mistakes to avoid

Tilting the deck of a hydraulic tilt trailer with the load in the wrong place is the biggest risk. If the machine is too far back when you raise the front, the deck can move fast or unevenly. Get the machine where it needs to be before you touch the controls.

Running the battery flat is next. If the pump can’t run, the deck won’t tilt, and you’re stuck with a machine you can’t unload. Keep a charger or jump pack handy.

Overloading the deck is the third. A compact excavator with a full set of buckets and a breaker adds up to more than people expect. Add up every machine and attachment, then subtract the trailer’s own weight from the GVWR to see if you’re inside the limit.

The fourth is chaining over hydraulic lines or soft parts of the machine. Use proper tie-down points and protect hoses and paint where chains cross.

Is a hydraulic tilt trailer worth the extra cost?

Compared with a ramp trailer, a hydraulic tilt trailer costs more and has more parts to look after. What you get back is speed, safety and less physical work. No lifting heavy ramps, no lining up tracks on narrow ramps, and a gentle loading angle for low cars and tall machines. If you load several times a week, the saved minutes and the lower risk of a machine slipping off a ramp add up fast.

For occasional use, a gravity tilt or a ramp trailer is fine. For daily use, the power tilt earns its money back.

What to check when it arrives

Run the deck up and down a few times empty to get a feel for the controls. Check the hydraulic fluid level, the battery charge, the lights and the brakes. Set the tire pressures and check the wheel nuts. Ask for the service schedule for the bearings and hydraulics so your hydraulic tilt trailer stays reliable for years.

Common questions

Do I need a brake controller?

At this weight, yes. Trailers rated this high have their own brakes, and your tow vehicle needs a controller to run them.

Can it carry a car?

Yes. The controlled tilt angle is gentle on low front bumpers, which is why a lot of car owners prefer a power tilt over ramps.

Gravity tilt or hydraulic, which is better?

Gravity tilts cost less and have fewer parts. Hydraulic tilts give you control and make sense if you load often or carry low or heavy machines.

Can I load pallets from the side?

On an open deck like this, yes. Lots of owners load pallets from the side with a forklift while the deck is level, and only use the tilt for machines and vehicles.

Is a special licence needed?

It depends on your country or region. Some places require an extra licence class once truck and trailer together pass a set weight. Check the rules locally before you buy.
